In the town of Leyland, England, a certain James Sumner and Henry Spurrier co-founded the Lancashire Steam Motor company which later became Leyland Motors in 1907 after manufacturing steam powered lawn mowers and its first vehicle- a 1.5ton steam powered van followed by several wagons also powered by steam engines, using a vertical fire-tube boiler and even their petrol engine vehicle of 1905. During the World War II, Leyland Motors built the Cromwell Tank in 1943 as well as several medium and large trucks such as the Hippo and the Retriever.

During 1993, DAF NV went into bankruptcy and was bought through a management bouy-out (an arrangement where a large part of a company is acquired from its parent or private owners). Over time, Leyland motors has come up with several lines of truck models such as the Hippo in 1940, the Martian in 1950, the Buffalo (Ergomatic), the Leyland90 and Comet in 1986. Others include LeylandDAF 200 and 400, 1989-1993, LeylandDAF60, 70 and 80. Some of the most recent line of trucks includes the Mississippi, Columbus and the Peterbilt which received the Frost & Sullivan Manufacturing Leadership award in 2014. LeylandDAF has a long standing reputation in the United States, and India.

Currently owned by PACCAR, LeylandDAF has received the prestigious award of Order of Distinction for its 18 consecutive years of participation in occupational health and safety performance.

Volvo Car Corporation was founded in the year 1927 by AB Volvo and SKFgroup. However, it is a Swedish luxury car manufacturer. Volvo headquarter is located in Gothenburg, the second largest city in Sweden. Originally, Volvo car corporation was founded on a subsidiary of the Svenska Kullagerfabriken AB who today ranks among the largest automobile manufacturing companies, worldwide. It is now owned by the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group of China.

Volvo automobile models has prided its existence on the strong, solid, safe and durable nature of the company’s products. The various safety measures in place to ensure this include the laminated glasses, on the Volvo Personvagnar (PV) model, the 3-point safety belt by Nil Bohlin and the side impact protection system (SIPS) on the on the 700, 940/960 and 850 models.

Volvo has made many other solid and advanced innovations on its cars such as 2002 – Roll Stability Control (XC90), the Personal Car Communicator featured in 2006(S80) the flexible-fuel engines of 2005 S40 models which now sells in various European markets, the plug-in hybrid concept car with electric range of 97kilometers; a feature of the V70 series of 2007, and the forced-induction four-cylinder engines also nicknamed “Drive-E”; a feature of the Volvo S60, V60 and XC60 SUV series of 2015.

Volkswagen was the original concept of the German Labour Front in the year 1936; a time when Germany’s automobile knowledge did not span beyond motorcycle. In recent times, the company has gained global recognition and with a global sales record of $9.7million in 2013.

Volkswagen is reportedly the founding member of the Volkswagen group, a multi-international corporation manufacturing a range of trucks and car brands, including Bugatti, Scania and Skorda. Volkswagen headquarter is in Wolfsburg, Germany.

Early models of Volkswagen cars include 1949 Volkswagen “split rear window” Sedan, Volkswagen Cabriolet (1953), 1300 Deluxe, circa 1966, 1963 VW Type 3 Notchback, 1969 VW Squareback (Type III) Volkswagen Polo (1975–1979 models). Some of the improved models of Volkswagen cars include the new beetle 1998-2010, Routan 2009-2013, the Pheaton 2013-2016. However, Volkswagen recorded a higher innovation in the production of the Volkswagen XL1 which rates as the most fuel-efficient car in the world with a potential mileage of 261 miles per gallon.

In 1999 Volkswagen won the most influential of the 20th-century wards and in 2010, the Volkswagen Polo won the World car of the year award.

Now the second largest-selling-brand car brand in the United Kingdom, Vauxhall Vehicles had its operation as a manufacturer of the pump engine started by Alexander Wilson in the year 1857. The little dream was expanded and named Vauxhall by Andrew Betts Brown who bought it over in the year 1863 and was producing travelling cranes with the brand name.

In 1903, a one-cylinder vehicle with five horsepower, two forward gears and no rear gear was manufactured as the company’s first car. That marked the beginning of Vauxhall vehicle supplies and after that they have taken a big toll in the world market. The Company’s headquarter in Bedfordshire was reckoned after General Motors acquired Vauxhall and established Bedford Vehicles as a subsidiary of Vauxhall Motors in 1930.

A Royal Warrant Holding company, their top models include HC Viva of 1970 which featured yearly among the 10 best selling cars in Britain until 1976. They increased their fortunes when they introduced Mk2 Cavalier, a front wheel drive with hatchback design in 1982. In 2011, they won the “European Car of the Year” when they introduced an extended range electric vehicle.

Today, Vauxhall Vehicles best cars include Corsa VXR, Astra, Viva, Adam, Zafira, Cascada, VXR8 and Meriva among others.

Suzuki is an automobile company based in Japan. The company was founded in 1909 by Michio Suzuki. It’s headquartered in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan, with production including motorcycles, 4 wheeled cars, marine engines, and all-terrain vehicles also referred to as ATVs. Suzuki was ranked the 9th largest automobile manufacturing company in the world in the year 2011 with its production facilities spread in over 23 countries and its brands sold in over 192 countries.

In 1937 Suzuki’s first car was manufactured as a prototype. The car was a 13 horsepower ride powered by four cylinders, four strokes, and a liquid coolant with an aluminium casing for the crank and gearbox.

Suzuki’s production capacity improved to about 6,000 motorcycle units  in 1854 and this success propelled the automobile product called Suzulight a year later. As of 2012, Suzuki was worth US$25.34 billion with Volkswagen holding 19.9% of its non-controlling stake. Though Suzuki has since bought the share back completely in 2015.

Ha Dong-hwan Motor Workshop and Dongbang Motor Co, established in the year 1954 and 1962 respectively merged together in 1963 to become Hadonghwan Motor Company. The Korean based company kicked off their production the following year to supply jeeps, trucks, and busses for the United States Army. Hadonghwan also manufactured other cars for different purposes.

In 1987, Ssangyong Business Group took over the company to change its name to Ssangyong Motors. The company’s engineering quality enabled an affiliation with Mercedes-Benz technology for the production of SUV, which led to the production of Musso initially sold by Mercedes-Benz before Ssangyong. Skoda started in December 1895 as manufacturer of push bikes, Vaclav Laurin (a mechanic) and Vaclav Klement (a bookseller) started designing and manufacturing Skoda as bicycles in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic and they called their first company Slavia.
