Officially being recognised as an automobile business in 2007 after reorganising its business, Fiat or Fiat Automobile S.p.A., Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino in Italian or Italian Automobiles Factory, Turin in English, is the biggest automobile manufacturer in Italy. It is a subsidiary of FCA Italy S.p.A. a part of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Its long history can be traced back in 1899 when its first automobile was produced.

Over the last four decades, Fiat has received the European Car of the Year award twelve times, with nine of these awards given to Fiat Automobiles models. The company currently has the most number of wins in the competition.

In view of environmental consciousness, Fiat has also been regarded as having the lowest average value of CO2 emissions from vehicles sold in 2008, as confirmed by JATO Dynamics Ltd, a global supplier of automotive business intelligence. Even back in the mid-1970s, electric vehicles had already been under development in Fiat with the concept of Fiat X1/23. In 2013, Fiat released the electric 500e in California, although it wasn’t planned to be available in Europe.
